Draft invitation for comment:

Why you should join Otway Ranges Climate Action

More and more frightening news arrives daily telling us that we are on the brink of global catastrophe. This news comes from people we should trust. But many of us don't know what to do about climate change or feel as though there is nothing we could do that would make any difference.

Most of us think of climate change as a gradual linear process that involves a smooth relationship between increasing levels of greenhouse gases and rising temperatures. In fact, small changes can have dramatic impacts and such impacts are already a reality at the earth's poles.

We have entered a critical period where the odds are stacked against us but the best advice is telling us that if we act now it is possible that we might avert an ecological catastrophe. Following the recent Garnaut report, it appears to be increasingly obvious that the kinds of decisions that need to be made will not, and cannot, be made by politicians or government agencies. This would be utterly depressing
were it not for the fact that powerful decisions, with global impact, are being made, and can be made, by individuals and by local groups supporting those individuals. That is why we have formed Otways Ranges Climate Action (ORCA). We believe:

* Local action has a global impact
* Effective, sustainable actions come from the communities that own and implement them

On August the 20th over 400 students from schools in Apollo Bay and Colac formed the human signs, calling on the community to, Act now! and reduce Co2.

We invite you to a Public Forum on Friday 17 October 2008 6:45pm - 9:00pm to find out what you can expect in the Otways and what you can do.

Speakers include:

1. The Impact of Climate Change in South West Victoria
John Sherwood, Snr Lecturer Env. Sciences, Development Deakin University

2. Hepburn Wind and a Distributed Renewable Energy Future
David Shapero, Managing Director, Future Energy Ltd

3. The Hepburn Wind Experience
Scott Kinnear, Hepburn Renewable Energy Association

Where: Senior Citizen's Centre - Whelan Street, Apollo Bay
[Gold coin donation and bring a plate if you wish] be early - seats limited.

Mike Barrow (Economic Development Manager with Colac Otway Shire) just rang me to inform that OCPG and ORCA have been given a timeslot on Friday the 19th of September at 6.10pm for 10 minutes to discuss with the enquiry by design team what is most important to them regarding the Apollo Bay Harbour Precinct Development. I recommend this to be an item to discuss at the ORCA meeting this Monday, to clarify and outline what members of ORCA would like to present.
with thanks

Great article by Rachel Sullivan in the current edition of Ecos magazine published by CSIRO. The article titled "Living culture whose time has come" is available as a .pdf download at:
http://www.publish.csiro.au/?act=view_file&file_id=EC144p8.pdf

or a shortened version for online viewing at:
http://www.sciencealert.com.au/features/20080309-17897.html

It's an excellent and very positive piece with some great photos
including an aerial view of Masdar the new car-free city under
construction in Abu Dhabi. You will need to download the .pdf to see all the photos and additional boxed content.
