Be inspired by Christine Milne’s speech

Gandhi once said, “The difference between what we do and what we are capable of doing would suffice to solve most of the world’s problems.”

We have reached a point in human history where “what we do” on this planet imperils our survival. Now is the moment to re-imagine and reconsider “what we are capable of doing”. read more

From Peter Campbell: The draft Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme Bill 2009 is released – 390+ pages.

* 450ppm CO2 confirmed (latest science indicates 300ppm for a safe climate future)
* 60 per cent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions from 2000 levels by 2050 (unchanged from 2007 election target).
* Between 5 per cent and 15 per cent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions from 2000 levels by 2020 (5% committed).
* Free permits for Australian emissions units will be issued for net greenhouse gas removals due to reafforestation that occur after the CPRS starts.
* No permits issued for protection of existing forests
* Coal Fired Electricity – 130.7 million Australian emissions units will be issued amongst eligible power stations on a pro rata basis
* Emissions-Intensive Trade-Exposed (EITE) assistance program provides assistance at two rates – 90 per cent and 60 per cent of a historic baseline of emissions per unit of production

In summary; not good at all. No emission reductions here, and no incentives for clean green energy & jobs.

ORCA News: 5th Feb 2009

Now:

1. Feed-in Tariff Petition: A feed-in tariff is a premium paid for electricity produced by a renewable such as a grid connected rooftop solar or wind or wave turbine. It’s usually over and above the market rate. National gross feed in tariff incentives have been established around the world. They result in increased uptake of solar and wind power systems by home owners and businesses.

To find out more and sign the petitionhttp://www.feedintariff.com.au/about.php

2. Let’s cheese-off Cheeseman. Labor’s Darren Cheeseman (Member for Corangamite) is soft on Climate Change. He’s content to hide behind the relentless and pathetic Rudd Government spin and inaction. The rate of Climate Change has created an emergency. There is no time for us to accept such weakness. We are awaiting his response to 3 questions:

1. Would you support our call for the scrapping of the CPRS?
2. Do you support our goal of 100% renewable energy in Australia by 2020?
3. Will you help Kevin Rudd understand that nothing less than 300ppm CO2 is acceptable as a target to take to Copenhagen?

Encirlcing Parliament House

Previously:

1. Brief report on the 3-day National Climate Action Summit 31st Jan – 2nd Feb. A Draft Media Release [Word 25KB] has been written.

Two representatives from South Coast Climate Action Groups, Graeme Stockon (SCEG) and Simon Pockley (ORCA) went to Canberra last week to participate in a 3-day National Climate Action Summit. They joined more than 500 representatives from 240 Community Climate Action Groups in calling for the Rudd Government to take urgent action on Climate Change.

There were a range of useful skills workshops and several inspirational speakers. Including Clive Hamilton (author of Scorcher – the dirty politics of Climate Change) and Green’s Senator Christine Milne. A Draft Policy was, and still is, being developed. ORCA (Simon Pockley) has volunteered to be part of the Drafting Team. Anyone else who would like to contribute is welcome. The power of this Policy is that it has been endorsed by the National Summit and provides clear goals for National action.

Three goals have top priority:

a. Scrap the Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme (CPRS) because in the face of Rudd’s pathetic 5% emissions target it simply provides polluters with a licence to increase their carbon emissions.
b. 100% renewable energy in Australia by 2020. This is path to economic prosperity.
c. Nothing less than 300ppm CO2 target for Rudd to take to Copenhagen. The best science shows that anything higher is unsafe and will result in large-scale ecological destruction.

2. Direct Action: ORCA members Matt Armstrong, Fiona Nelson, Jeff Kennedy and Simon Pockley joined more than 2000 people on Tuesday in encircling Parliament House in Canberra with the aim of signalling Rudd that that it was time he started to take notice of Professor Garnaut, science and the expectations of the people who understand the urgency of the situation.
