  1. A National network for community climate action groups around Australia has been proposed. You can vote online whether or not you think this is a good idea by following the link: National Community Climate Network voting link [PDF 93KB]. Such a network could act as a lobbying group for climate action, as advocating at the national level is very difficult for local community groups.

1. 13th June : NATIONAL CLIMATE EMERGENCY RALLY this Saturday

Saturday will see climate change rallies across Australia. Be part of calling for 100% renewable energy by 2020, green collar jobs not job cuts, global climate justice, and policies that make the big polluters pay. 2. June 15th – 20th: Festival of ideas: The inaugural Festival of Ideas is being held at Melbourne University, with the topic on Climate Change. Check it out at this link: http://ideas.unimelb.edu.au/ .

There are numerous sessions that would be worthwhile (over 6 days with more than 50 speakers), although I draw your particular attention to the session at 3:30pm on Wednesday 17th (The New Generation and Climate Change: Repairing the Ills of the Old) which includes Matthew Wright from Beyond Zero Emissions that I was able to organise. Professors David Karoly (IPCC on climate change) and Ross Garnaut will be together discussing ‘The Warming of the World’ on Tuesday at 10:00am which should also be pretty entertaining.

3. 24th June: Over the next two weeks (starting tomorrow!), the Government is holding public workshops to seek community and expert advice on how voluntary climate change action can be taken into account when setting emission caps for the Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme (CPRS).

CHOICE is looking for volunteers across Australia to attend the workshops to make sure the voices of Australian consumers are heard. While you won’t be representing CHOICE we would appreciate a report back on the outcomes of the workshop. The meetings schedule is set out below:

4. 11-13th July 2009 “POWER SHIFT”!

Power Shift is Australia’s first national youth climate summit. Join with
thousands of other young people who are coming together to stand up against
climate change and repower our future.

Speakers includie Tim Flannery (Australian of the Year 2007), Simon Sheik
(Executive Director of GetUp), Larissa Brown (Young Environmentalist of the
Year 2007) and more!

Power Shift will be held from 11-13th July 2009 at the University of Western
Sydney Parramatta Campus.

5. 13th July: Safe Climate Australia – a not-for-profit group dedicated to planning the transition to a zero-carbon economy.

Safe Climate Australia has been formed by a group of concerned climate scientists, community and business leaders with a shared understanding of the need for emergency action to restore a safe climate.

Safe Climate Australia will be officially launched at an event for 1000 invited guests in Melbourne on July 13, with a keynote speech from Nobel Prize winner, Al Gore.
